Ekron

Ekron was an ancient city in Israel first settled by the Canaanites in the Bronze Age. During the Iron Age, with the invasion of the Sea People, the city became an important Philistine city. At the end of the 8th century BC the Assyrians conquered the city and took over. At that time the city was known as a manufacturer of olive oil on a large scale.
In 603 BC the city was completely destroyed by the Babylonian Empire led by Nebuchadnezzar. Shortly afterwards, there was a small community in the lower city, and a short time later also abandoned, and the city has not been settled ever since.

According to the Mikra, in the division of the country, the city was intended for the tribe of Judah, but other biblical sources was intended for the tribe of Dan. In actuality, the Philistines were settled there.

The city is mentioned in other contexts in the Bible, as the Ark was captured by the Philistines, members if the city was fearful of letting the Ark in, so the’ve sent it to Beit Shemesh. Also ,after the death of Goliath said Philistines fled to the gates of Ekron. Residents of the CITY mentioned in the Bible as their worshipers of Beelzebub, the god that Ahaziah king of Israel follow when he was sick.
